Wheelchairs of Hope donated wheelchairs to Rotara School

Early on Monday 27th February, WIZO Johannesburg volunteers Andrea Wainer, Brenda Trope and Jill Suttner, together with WIZO Johannesburg driver, Johnson Mavhanga, set out for the Rotara School in Carletonville. This school caters for mentally and physically disabled children, making a difference in the lives of the children by focusing on their abilities as opposed to their disabilities.
Their mission was to deliver Wheelchairs of Hope to three very special children at the school.
The school has minimal government funding, supplemented by fundraising which enables them to provide an excellent education to students from Grade R to Grade 5. Each class is kept small to ensure the teacher and her teaching assistant can give each child maximum attention. The school also has a variety of therapists and social workers to assist them. They offer various extra curricular activities – dependent on funds available – like embroidery classes, cooking lessons, horse riding etc. The students are prepared for life after school and many of them have jobs in various businesses in town.
The Wheelchairs of Hope were developed by specialist Israeli doctors and engineers from ALYN Hospital, Israel’s leading paediatric and adolescent rehabilitation centre, with the simple wish to “empower education through mobility”. Aimed at children from five to nine years old who have upper-body strength and weigh up to 40kg, these colourful, ergonomically-designed wheelchairs are lightweight and robust to handle urban and country terrains.
There was much excitement when the children discovered no-one would be left out as there was delicious cake for everyone to celebrate.
